Hawaii is extremely vulnerable to disasters and major emergencies due to its geographic isolation or distance to the mainland, dependence on shipping, limited resources and a just-in-time logistics system. Resources are even more limited on the neighbor islands. If a disaster were to happen, it will take an estimated week or more for federal assistance to initially reach us. Hawaii will be on its own for that period of time and more following a disaster.
Hawaii Healthcare Emergency Management is a non-profit program that was established and currently exists to decrease healthcare system vulnerability in Hawaii. The program reduces vulnerability by stockpiling supplies, leveraging the healthcare system within the entire state such as supplies, equipment and healthcare workers, deploying field hospitals, deploying medical teams to assist with staffing shortages, staff field hospitals, and engage in numerous , prepositioning supplies and equipment, integrating systems such as communication, patient tracking and information sharing and coordinating patient movement, operations, and resources to support existing and anticipated healthcare needs.
This program currently is 100% dependent on federal grant money which is been cut more than 60%. Even though HHEM maximizes the use of every penny extremely efficiently, the lack of sufficient funds limits the level of healthcare preparedness and sustainability, etc. All of your donation will go directly to Hawaii Healthcare Emergency Management to obtain and replace expiring supplies and equipment, maintain and sustain equipment, and the statewide healthcare integrated communication and information sharing systems, and increasing capability within the healthcare system in order to reduce our vulnerability and impact.
If you are interested in donating to support Hawaii healthcare preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery, please make a check payable to HHERF (Hawaii Hospital Education and Research Foundation). That is the non-profit organization that Hawaii Healthcare Emergency Management resides. You may mail the check to the following address:
